This course explores the complex relationship between firearms, crime, and public policy in the United States.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Students will examine historical and contemporary issues surrounding gun ownership, gun violence, and the legal and societal frameworks that shape firearm regulations. Key topics include the Second Amendment, the impact of firearms on criminal behavior, the role of gun control laws in preventing violence, and the ongoing debates about gun rights versus public safety. Through case studies, policy analysis, and research, students will critically assess the effectiveness of current laws and propose evidence-based solutions to address gun-related crime and violence in society.

• Examine the nature of firearms ownership and acquisition in the United States
• Study the use of firearms in the commission of crime and violence
• Critically analyze policy responses to rates of violence, injury, and death associated with guns
• Evaluate the effectiveness of current policies to respond to gun violence, injury and death

 

Assessment Measures

Knowledge and understanding of the material covered in this course, including the ability to apply it to real life situations, may be measured using an array of assessment tools such as tests, applied exercises, formal and informal written assignments, oral presentations, and class discussion. Instructors of this course can choose among these assessment tools and may develop others if they deem it appropriate.
