2. Sentencing and the Correctional Process
3. Institutional Corrections
4. Community Based Corrections
5. Correctional Populations and Programs
6. Correctional Issues, Controversies, and Perspectives

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Several instructional strategies will be used, including but not limited to lectures, case studies, student presentations, group learning projects, written assignments (e.g., exams, research papers), and discussions of films and other examples of popular culture.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The student will be able to:

1. describe the historical development of corrections and the major philosophies of punishment.
2. explain the sentencing process and its impact on corrections.
3. compare the structure, function, and administration of institutional and community-based correctional programs.
4. assess the effectiveness of correctional programs and policies in reducing recidivism.
5. discuss the unique challenges and needs of special populations in corrections.
6. identify and analyze current controversies and challenges in corrections.

Assessment Measures

Knowledge and understanding of the material covered in this course, including the ability to apply it to real life situations, may be measured using an array of assessment tools such as quizzes, tests, applied exercises, formal and informal written assignments, group work, oral presentations, and class discussion. Instructors of this course can choose among these assessment tools and may develop others if they deem it appropriate.

Other Course Information

The instructor may utilize "field trips" in order to help the student gain practical insights into organizational problems/solutions. Corrections officials may be utilized as guests.
