Distributed Systems Design

A study of distributed database management systems including study of data fragmentation, query processing, scalability, and performance.

 

2. Detailed Description of Course

Topics include:

  • Introduction to distributed databases
    • Need for distributed databases
    • Types of distributed architectures
    • Challenges with distributed computing architectures
  • Comparison of various distributed DBMS architectures
  • Scalability and reliability of distributed architectures
  • Performance tuning on distributed databases.

 

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Blended delivery combines video lectures, online resources, class discussion, and hands-on learning activities that include a relational and a distributed database management system.   
 
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students who successfully complete this class will:

  1. Describe and apply general principles and concepts of distributed computing and distributed computing networks
  2. Design and implement distributed database applications
  3. Compare and contrast consolidated and distributed query processing and concurrency control
  4. Describe distributed database management reliability
  5. Describe NoSQL solutions to voluminous semi-structured data
  6. Describe and apply techniques to tune database management systems

 

5. Assessment Measures

A significant component of the assessment must measure each individual student’s mastery of the conceptual and applied knowledge and skills described in the course objectives. Evaluations may include, but are not limited to: assignments, projects, presentations, quizzes, and examinations.
