An in-depth study of evidence-based approaches to assessment and intervention with individuals with autism spectrum disorder addressing speech, language, cognition, play, and communication.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course will provide students with a comprehensive review of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder related to speech, language, and communication. A wide range of evidence-based approaches to assessment and intervention will be described, including a review of the supporting research. The course will include the following topics:

A Historical Perspective of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Signs, Symptoms, and Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Related Diagnoses, Including the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria published by the American Psychiatric Association

Assessment Tools and Strategies

Intervention Approaches

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Through a combination of lectures, discussions, independent and group activities, students will develop competencies in:

  1. describing the key characteristics of autism spectrum disorder in the areas of speech, language, communication, cognition, and play
  2. describing the roles and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists in the ethical assessment and treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorder
  3. describing the diagnostic criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association
  4. conducting comprehensive assessments supported by the latest research in autism spectrum disorder
  5. developing customized intervention plans based on evidence-based approaches
  6. developing skills in critical thinking, with a focus on identifying and critically evaluating research related to autism spectrum disorder using appropriate research databases

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment of students’ competencies in the learning outcomes for the course may include assignments, quizzes, and exams.
