BIOL 493

BIOL 493. Apprentice Teaching

Credit Hours: (1-2)

Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor and of Department Chair

Students taking this course will learn about teaching Biology by assisting a professor in teaching a course in the Biology curriculum.

Note(s): The course may be taken multiple times for credit, but a maximum of two credits may be counted towards the Biology requirements.  A maximum of six credit hours of BIOL 491/BIOL 492/BIOL 493/BIOL 495 may be applied to the Biology major; any additional credit hours will apply as university electives.

 

Content

Course content will vary depending on the mentoring professor and the course the student is assisting with.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will assist the faculty member/ mentor in teaching a course. Students will generally be expected to meet regularly with their faculty mentor to discuss the course and to attend class sessions.  Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, setting up laboratory materials, helping teach laboratory sections, proctoring exams, holding regular tutoring sessions, holding review sessions, leading a laboratory exercise, or delivering occasional lectures or class activities. The exact responsibilities will be determined and agreed upon by the mentor and student in consultation. 

 

Student Goals and Objectives of the Course

Since teaching others is one of the best ways to master the material, students will gain a higher level of mastery of the course material.  In addition, the student will gain experience in and insight into the process of teaching the material at a college level.

 

Assessment Measures

Students will be evaluated on their satisfactory completion of their assigned responsibilities.

 

Other Course Information

This course may be repeated for credit, but a maximum of two (2) credits in BIOL 493 may count toward the biology major. A maximum of six credit hours of BIOL 491/BIOL 492/BIOL 493/BIOL 495 may be applied to the Biology major; any additional credit hours will apply as university electives.  Students will register by submitting a paper form signed by the instructor and the department chair, as is currently done for BIOL 491, 492, and 495.
