Central Virginia Community College joins Tartan Transfer, opening new pathways for students in its 60th anniversary year

As Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) celebrates 60 years of transforming lives across Lynchburg and the surrounding region, the college is opening an exciting new chapter for its students. CVCC has signed a Tartan Transfer partnership agreement with Radford University, giving CVCC students a clear, affordable and supported pathway to complete a four-year degree. 

With this agreement, CVCC becomes the 10th and final partner in Tartan Transfer — now the largest two-year-public-to-four-year-public transfer alliance in Virginia. More than 100 CVCC students were enrolled at Radford University last fall, and this agreement will allow Radford to benefit even further from talented Ridgecats. 

“For 60 years, Central Virginia Community College has created opportunities for our community to build brighter futures through accessible, high-quality education,” said CVCC President John Capps. “Our partnership with Radford University strengthens that legacy by providing our students with a clear and supportive pathway to a bachelor’s degree. Tartan Transfer will help our students move forward with confidence, knowing that the work they begin at CVCC will continue to count toward their academic and career goals.”

What Tartan Transfer Means for CVCC Students 
For six decades, CVCC has been a launching pad — helping students in Central Virginia earn credentials, change careers and build brighter futures without leaving their community. The Tartan Transfer partnership extends that mission, making it easier than ever for CVCC students to continue into a four-year degree program at Radford University. 

CVCC students who join Tartan Transfer benefit from: 

• Direct admission to Radford for students with a 2.5 GPA or higher,
• Free tuition opportunities through the Radford Tuition Promise,
• Personalized advising from both CVCC and Radford to map out each student's course of study,
• Maximized transfer credits, so the work done at CVCC counts toward a Radford degree,  
• Early access to Radford's campus and events, helping students feel at home before they arrive, and
• Special internships and co-curricular experiences designed to prepare students for career success. 

Building on a Strong Transfer Tradition 
Radford University enrolls approximately 600 new transfer students each year, with more than half coming from Virginia's community colleges. Roughly one out of every three new Radford students is a transfer student — a testament to the university's long-standing commitment to welcoming community college graduates and honoring the education they've received.  

Combined with a no-fee application, no required essay and no recommendation letters, Radford's transfer pathway is one of the most accessible in Virginia. 

Looking Ahead 
Radford University will host its second annual Tartan Transfer Summit on Sept. 22, bringing together higher education leaders and partner institutions — now including CVCC — to strengthen collaboration and celebrate the continued growth of the program.
