Ruby Dowd of Floyd, Virginia, is the first student to officially enroll at Radford
through the Tartan Transfer program, a landmark partnership with eight community colleges
designed to create a seamless transfer experience for area students.
Launched earlier this year, the Tartan Transfer program offers Virginia Community
College System students a clear and affordable pathway to earn a four-year degree
at Radford University.
By aligning academic programs and providing dedicated advising, the initiative underscores
the institutions’ shared commitment to student success and regional workforce development.
Dowd, a biology major who comes to Radford from New River Community College, expressed
excitement about the opportunity.
"I am so excited to be a part of the Tartan Transfer program,” she said. “It is such
a relief to me to have the support provided by this program and all the wonderful
faculty members working to make my transfer as smooth as possible. Because of the
Tartan Transfer program, Radford already feels like home."
As a newcomer to campus, Dowd picked up her student ID card, met one of the Tartan
Tails therapy dogs and attended the Radford Community Fest. She will have access to
student events, clubs and services. The hope is that these community college students
feel as part of the community as Radford University students.
“The Tartan Transfer program reflects Radford’s mission to open doors of opportunity
for students in our region,” said Radford University President Bret Danilowicz. “Ruby
embodies the spirit of achievement, and we are thrilled to welcome her as our first
official Tartan Transfer student.”
New River Community College President Robert Brandon shared his excitement. “This
partnership ensures that students like Ruby can pursue their dreams without unnecessary
barriers. We are proud to see our students continue their education at Radford and
know this program will benefit many more to come.”
The Tartan Transfer program continues Radford University’s strong tradition of collaboration
with community colleges across Virginia, ensuring that students can Find Their Place
Here while pursuing meaningful careers and lifelong success.
