Focus and Philosophy: d'Art Richard believes that music is one of very few things that is a universal experience
for all people. To that point, he feels that it is paramount that the future generations
of musicians must be just as, if not more capable of artistry than those of the past.
Meeting students where they are with individual approaches means that all can rise
above what they thought themselves capable of
Background: d'Art has always appreciated music, but only began taking it seriously in high school
when it began to be an outlet to improve his mental health. He believes that music
should not only enrich the lives of audiences, but also the lives of performers.
Teaching: At Radford, d'Art serves as an adjunct instructor for chamber music, as well as being
the Admissions and Social Media Coordinator for the Department of Music. During the
summers, he serves as the Coordinator of Music Operations and Music Performance for
the Virginia Summer Residential Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts
and Humanities. Beyond campus, he is a private instructor of clarinet and music theory.
Research/Scholarship/Creative Work: His primary area of research is focusing on how to improve wind musicians' physical
health. With a strong belief that most repetitive strain injuries can be entirely
prevented in wind musicians, he has done extensive research into airway injuries and
their treatment. Currently, he is a candidate to be a chair of the International Clarinet
Association's Health and Wellness Committee.
