Peter McCann serves as the Director of Emergency Management at Radford University,
where he leads the university’s preparedness, response, continuity, and mitigation
efforts. Since 2019, he has provided strategic leadership to strengthen institutional
resilience through proactive planning, interagency coordination, and crisis management.
He also oversees the Public Safety Communications Center and the university’s student-run,
volunteer EMS agency.
Peter is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) through the International Association
of Emergency Managers, a Virginia Professional Emergency Manager (VAPEM), a Certified
Business Continuity Professional (CBCP), and a FEMA Level I Professional Continuity
Practitioner. He is also a graduate of the FEMA National Emergency Management Basic
Academy.
He remains active in the broader emergency management community, currently serving
on the Executive Committee of the Virginia Emergency Management Association (VEMA)
and as Chair of the VEMA Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) Caucus. He is also
a member of the Southwest Virginia Incident Management Team and serves as the Region
3 Representative for the IAEM Universities & Colleges Caucus.
A proud two-time #RadGrad, Peter holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal
justice from Radford University. He began his emergency management career at Virginia
Tech, where he served as an Emergency Coordinator and later as the Emergency Planner.
That experience laid the foundation for his return to his alma mater to lead its emergency
management efforts.
