Focus and Philosophy: From experiences in art museums, K-12 classrooms, and on college campuses, Dr. Stuart
Robinson believes that art is a powerful tool for transforming individuals and communities.
Background: Dr. Robinson grew up in a small, farming community outside the Shenandoah National
Park. From an early age, he developed passions for hiking, gardening, music, and Appalachian
culture, the latter of which is the focus of his artwork.
Teaching: At Radford, Dr. Robinson is an associate professor and the former Chair of the Department
of Art (2020-2025). As the program coordinator in art education, he believes in mixing
methods, modeling best practices, and staying curious. In his classes, Dr. Robinson
promotes meaningful, focused work and emphasizes growth, grit, and social responsibility.
With great pleasure, Dr. Robinson has watched students develop into active learners,
deep thinkers, creative problem solvers, and caring teachers.
Research: Dr. Robinson has shared his creative scholarship in regional, national, and international
forums. He has been published in the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, which
he later joined as a reviewer, and he was named as a 40-under-40 artist by the Shenandoah
Valley Art Center in 2018. Dr. Robinson has exhibited his fiber art and installations
in national, juried shows in Santa Fe, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Kansas City, and
Seattle, among other locations.
