Brent Webb

Focus and Philosophy: Brent Webb is a painter and educator who believes a successful work of art becomes more than the sum of its parts. It can hold competing ideas at once: beauty and unease, clarity and ambiguity, what we collectively see and what we personally make of it. He is interested in how ordinary images and experiences can open onto larger questions without offering easy answers.

That openness also shapes his teaching. Technical skill matters, but Webb wants students to become flexible, resourceful artists who can solve problems, adapt, and act on their own ideas.

Background: Webb grew up in a rural area where he rarely encountered art as a profession. His interest in drawing began with copying comic books and Iron Maiden album covers (Up the Irons!), images that suggested entire worlds beyond what we see around us. As a first-generation college student, he earned his B.F.A. from Columbus College of Art & Design and his M.F.A. from the Hoffberger School of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Outside the studio and classroom, Brent enjoys cooking, reading, gardening, listening to all the subgenres of metal, and trying to master sourdough.

Teaching: Webb believes studio art is learned through making. Ideas matter, but making tests those ideas: problems become visible, and new possibilities emerge. He works with students as individual artists, helping them clarify their interests rather than steering them toward a particular style. He offers guidance and asks difficult questions, but students must learn to make and defend their own decisions. He wants them to leave with stronger skills, confidence in their judgment, and the resourcefulness needed for a life in the arts.

Webb teaches painting and drawing at the undergraduate and graduate levels, along with courses in conceptual development and artistic thinking. Critique, conversation, and learning from peers are important parts of his classes.

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Work: Painting is at the center of Webb’s studio practice. He is especially interested in weather and atmosphere as active forces within an image. Edges disappear, forms become unstable, and figures seem affected by their surroundings, leaving the painting open and unresolved.

Beauty serves as a point of entry rather than an end in itself. Webb gives viewers enough information to enter a painting without directing them toward a single meaning. Part of painting’s appeal is the tension between its basic materials and what they can hold.

Webb has exhibited his paintings nationally at universities, museums, and galleries, including the Beeler Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. His work has received awards in juried exhibitions.
