III. Credit Hours: 1 credit 

IV. Prerequisites: Maker LLC-specific UNIV 100 section or permission of the instructor

V. Course Description: 

Students will prepare for, participate in, discuss, and evaluate Maker Living-Learning community activities and projects.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

This course is designed to expose students to new Maker activities as part of their participation in the Maker Living-Learning Community. Such activities in the past have included ceramics making, Adobe Design software, Arduino programming, weaving, book binding, pop-up art, 3D printing, power tool usage, and Glowforge laser cutting. They will engage with professors from across the campus community who will present to them as well as external guest speakers from organizations such as The Taubman Center. The activities will change each semester based on student interest but will be a mix of making related activities that teach new skills. Students will also participate in community-service projects with organizations such as Toys Like Me®.

VII. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

The course will be taught in one 50-minute classroom session a week. The sessions will be interactive, combining classroom discussion, presentations by the instructor, and visiting guests to talk about particular issues.

VIII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

At the conclusion of the course the students will be able to:

  1. Identify appropriate Maker-equipment and skills needed for new projects.
  2. Execute those skills to bring projects from an idea to a physical product.

IX. Assessment Measures:

Students will be evaluated on their attendance, participation, a journal, and presentation of final project at. They will receive a grade based on these evaluations.
