DNCE 431: Advanced ContemporaryDance Technique

Prerequisites: DNCE 331

Credit Hours: (2) 

Instructional Method: Six hours technique.

Provides advanced-level exploration of contemporary dance techniques with an emphasis on refining alignment, developing ability to self-correct, and expanding movement vocabulary. It is a preparatory course to enter the professional field of dance.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.  May be taken multiple times for credit.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

1)  Advanced contemporary dance vocabulary
            a) body alignment
            b) initiation of movement
            c) sophisticated rhythmic and spatial patterns

2)  Critical analysis
            a) self evaluation
            b) iTunes U

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course material is presented in the form of demonstration and repetition followed by correction, clarification and discussion of exercises. It also includes self-evaluations utilizing iTunes U, assignments, and performance viewings.  It may include guest lecturers with expertise in supplementary areas.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course the students will be able to:

1) Demonstrate technical skills to perform at the advanced/professional dance level

2) Display a sensitivity to the nuances of alignment

3) Self evaluate artistic aspects of dance performance and style including dynamics and phrasing

1)     Daily observation of students’ performance during class

2)     iTunes U midterm and final evaluation

3)     Class Discussion

4)     Attendance

5)    Weekly journal
