STAT 488H. Final Honors Project

Prerequisites: Major in mathematics, enrollment in the Honors Academy, completion of all other Honors Academy requirements, a minimum 3.5 GPA in all courses and in mathematics and statistics, senior standing

Credit Hours: (3)

Topics in statistics determined by the student, the faculty member with whom the student works and the department. In order to receive honors credit, a student must earn a grade of A or B for the final project. See “Honors Academy.”

Note(s): Course may not be repeated.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The content of the course will vary with each student, depending on both the student's interests and the faculty member's expertise.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The student and instructor will meet either two or three hours per week, depending on the credit hours decided upon, to discuss the topic and the progress made by the student. The student is expected to present a talk on his/her topic during the last week of classes, open to any interested parties in the academic community.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. To involve the student in research in statisitcs.
2. To develop in the student the self-reliance and confidence necessary to successfully study statistics on his/her own.
3. To afford the student the opportunity to lecture to his professors and his peers.
4. To develop in each student the ability to communicate his/her ideas to his/her professors and peers.

 

Assessment Measures

A committee consisting of the supervising professor, one professor chosen by the supervising professor, and one professor chosen by the student will be responsible for evaluating the success of the project.
