Kyle Gillikin was in eighth grade when he discovered his passion for theatre and drama. Looking for a club to join and knowing his interest in stage production, Gillikin joined his middle school drama club where he was selected to be the stage manager for a school play.
Just a few years after that first taste of theatre production, Gillikin attended the Virginia State Thespian Conference, which was held at Radford University that year. The opportunity provided him with his first glimpse into what the Theatre department at Radford University has to offer. When he began researching colleges, Radford stood out in his mind.
“Radford University’s affordability and great educational offerings really came into play and took the win for me,” he said.
After applying for admission and a scholarship in the Theatre department, Gillikin was invited to campus for a tour and interview.
“The campus was so much bigger and even more beautiful than I had remembered,” he said. “During my tour, I was guided by two seniors at the time and their passion and spirit for the department showed me how much this program means to them.”
With an outstanding high school GPA, Gillikin qualified for the Nancy Necessary Pridemore Scholarship. After completing his freshman year with a 3.9 GPA, Gillikin has retained the Pridemore scholarship and also received the Kim Fiola Alpha Psi Omega Memorial Scholarship.
After graduation, Gillikin plans to start working in the field as a stage manager. He hopes to one day earn an MFA in stage management and teach at the collegiate level.
