It is the University’s mission to empower students from diverse backgrounds by providing transformative educational experiences, from the undergraduate to the doctoral level, both within and beyond the classroom. And, each and every day, we make a profound impact on our students. We support them as they become strong citizen-leaders, devoted scholars and lifelong learners. We encourage them to give back to their local communities and make our shared world a better place. At the same time, we are embracing innovation and tradition in the academic environment to foster intellectual growth, while our students are on campus, but also after they begin their careers and their professional lives.

With the ongoing implementation of our five-year strategic plan, we are truly embracing the tradition and envisioning the future. Without question, members of the Radford family are responsive, resilient and real. Over the summer, the Radford family grew as our merger with Jefferson College of Health Sciences was completed, and Radford University Carilion was established. The merger added 19 programs to Radford University’s offerings, bolstering our academic portfolio and improving healthcare education in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond. This great work would not have been possible without the dedication of the faculty, staff and the community, as well as our partnership with Carilion Clinic. As a result, I am tremendously proud of our tireless efforts to step forward as a pre-eminent provider of health sciences education in the New River and Roanoke valleys.

Partnerships were an important part of the last year as Radford University and Emory & Henry College joined together to sign cooperative agreements establishing three accelerated graduate programs that will significantly shorten the time it takes for students to complete their undergraduate and graduate education, putting students into the workforce earlier. We also signed a landmark agreement with New River Community College, further strengthening our ongoing relationship with a Guaranteed Transfer Partnership Agreement with the neighboring Dublin campus.

Throughout the late spring and early summer months, the Highlander Family Tour provided an engaging and rare opportunity to experience firsthand the impact our alumni are having in their communities and across the world. During a total of eight stops in the Commonwealth and the nearby states of Georgia and North Carolina, we met new individuals and reconnected with loyal supporters. It was truly an honor to hear your stories, see your passion and share in your success. Thank you for everything that you do for your beloved alma mater and remember that this campus remains your home!

Through a pursuit of discovery, dedication to scholarship and spirit of service, we are collectively bridging the knowledge and skills gap by providing new opportunities for our students and our citizens. It is our mission to create and nurture students who are responsive, a future that is resilient and Highlanders who are real. This is our purpose and our reason. This is Radford University, and we are Highlanders!

With Highlander Pride,

Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D.
