2017-18 Annual Report

Without question, this is a great time to be a Highlander!"

President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D.

Dear Radford Family:

I am pleased to share with you Radford University’s Annual Report for 2017-2018 [PDF], a year marked by growth and innovation. With active engagement by the Radford family, including students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, we are further establishing Radford as an innovative and premier university in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond with a keen focus on teaching, research and service.

The 2017-2018 Annual Report is organized around the focal areas of the 2018-2023 strategic plan, “Embracing the Tradition and Envisioning the Future,” including:

  • Student Success;
  • Academic Excellence and Research;
  • Strategic Enrollment Growth;
  • Brand Identity;
  • Philanthropic Giving and Alumni Engagement; and
  • Economic Development and Community Partnerships.

In this year’s annual report, you will meet students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of our caring community and share in their outstanding accomplishments. These stories are examples of the remarkable individuals who comprise the Radford family and make Radford University so very special. The achievements highlighted in this report would not have been possible without the sustained efforts of so many. As such, I am sincerely grateful for the steadfast guidance and lasting commitment of students, faculty and staff, as well as the generous support of our donors and friends.

Radford University has always been and will always be a unique institution due to the values for which we stand, as well as our spirit of service and our enthusiasm for everything we do. Highlander faculty and staff are committed to preparing a diverse and dynamic student body to be scholars and citizenleaders. At Radford University, we are making a significant impact upon our students.

Our five-year strategic plan calls for our University and those we proudly serve to innovate by acting boldly and creatively. One such innovation is the merger of the Jefferson College of Health Sciences into Radford University. Carilion Clinic, Jefferson College of Health Sciences and Radford University representatives are hard at work in merging the academic portfolio and dedicated personnel of Jefferson College into the Radford family.

Our combined tradition of service and reputation for excellence and financial strength provide a solid foundation for future success. Building upon that foundation, Radford University is stepping forward as a pre-eminent provider of health sciences, healthcare and human services education. With the completed merger in August 2019, Radford University will expand its delivery of quality healthcare education and will provide additional students with unparalleled access to valuable clinical experiences and research opportunities. I am confident that our graduates will continue to enter our region’s hospitals, clinics and homes ready to serve by greatly enhancing the health of the New River Valley, Roanoke Valley, Southwest Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia and its citizens.

Concurrently, the IMPACT Program is expanding our educational and service mission across the region and the Commonwealth. With a historic grant from the U.S. Department of Education and a growing list of corporate partners, Radford University is fortifying our leadership position in addressing critical areas of need in cybersecurity, education and geospatial intelligence.

After reflecting upon the achievements and successes of the past year, we look forward to building new partnerships and expanding existing collaborations that sustain our campus and our community. Without question, this is a great time to be a Highlander! I look forward to what the future holds for Radford University and for each and every one of us.

With Highlander Pride,
