2020 SURF Awards:

Jose M. Bermudez, under the mentorship of Dr. Kevin Bowers will analyze different Colleges Web Portals and the structure they have made regarding mental health; it will determine how easy or difficult is for students to find counseling/therapy resources on campus, and how many of these resources are available online.

Isabella Brothers, under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Boyd, will be conducting an analysis of the role of medical examiners in public health and scientific education regarding opioid addiction and overdose in local communities near the Radford University campus as well as the state of Virginia as a whole.

Brandon Crawford, under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Close, will gain a deeper understanding of the eastern rat snake and determine if it is actually multiple separate species. 

Victoria Cristwell under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Boyd will examine African American health across the late 17th through 20th centuries as told through skeletal biomarkers of stress, with a particular focus on diachronic change in the skeletal series across this period.

Hope Davis under the mentorship of Dr. Pam Jackson will study the behavioral effects of early maternal separation in rats.

Sam Doncaster under the mentorship of Drs. Wirgau and Pate will be determining the impact of participating in undergraduate research at Radford University.

Caitlynn Fischer under the mentorship of Dr. Sandy Liss will be using optical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to determine the distribution of stars in interacting dwarf galaxies

Connor Fox under the mentorship of Dr. Justin Anderson will be using Hydroxylamine to cause genetic mutations in the bacteriophage HanSolo and examining how these mutations affect the phage's infectiousness.

Ling Jie Gu under the mentorship of George Stephenson will artistically reconstruct a model of Archaeopteryx lithographica for the Radford University Museum of The Earth Sciences based upon research information and fossil evidence.

Angie Holmes under the mentorship of Dr. Jamie Lau will be comparing the emerging, adult insect diversity and biomass between control stream sites and sites impacted by a natural gas pipeline installation.

Maci Keaton, under the mentorship of Dr. Kathleen Poole, will conduct an epidemiology study using archival data to examine the correlation between lead exposure and neurodegenerative disease prevalence across 100 counties in North Carolina.

Megan Kong under the mentorship of Dr. DiMaio will be using a qualitative approach using phenomenological inquiry on the experiences of Cantonese identifying university music therapy students.

Sarah Miller and Maggie Doherty with the guidance of Dr. Patricia Winter will determine where the overlap of practices of Music Therapy and Speech Language Pathology are and potentials methods of improving interprofessional relations.

Liv Morka under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew DeCarlo will be conducting a systematic review exploring the efficacy of the N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate antagonist, Ketamine, as a treatment for L-DOPA related Dyskinesia in Parkinson’s patients.

Drew Myers under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis, will be studying the effects of cognitive testing on neuroendocrine and behavioral changes in captive zebra finches.

Tyler Rhea, under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth McClellan, will collect and analyze glacially deposited rocks of the Konnarock Formation using isotopic age-dating methods in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia, to compare with "Snowball Earth" deposits around the world.

Taylor Sharpe under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Boyd will analyze the effect of demographic (age, sex, ancestry), biomechanical, and health comorbidities upon bone repair rates in individuals who have repetitive injury.

Noah Staples under the mentorship of Dr. Riane Bolin will test to see whether the public’s belief regarding the punitiveness of prisons has any bearing on public support for criminal justice policies.

Jeannie Tene under the mentorship of Dr. Katie Arnold are studying the benefits of retrieval practices on high and low structure builders.

Dennis Utt, under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Foltz, will be studying the effects of artificial light at night on the breeding behaviors on eastern bluebirds and tree swallows.

2019 SURF Awards:

Sean Ammen under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis will study the effect of Vespa Amino Acid Mixture (VAAM) on different genetic strains of fruit flies to understand its impact on mitochondrial function.

Rae Barker under the mentorship of Dr. Kristan Morrison will be conducting a qualitative study of Albany Free School alumni - exploring their life outcomes, and their perceptions/judgement of their unconventional schooling experience, with a particular focus on the lack of special education services available at the school.

Gabriel Bennett, Emily Jenkins, and Haley Nunez under the mentorship of Dr. Tay Keong Tan will be conducting research into world poverty to uncover correlations, patterns, and solutions through the analyses of educational artifacts of an Anti-Poverty Toolkit for the United Nations.

Katherine Bindbeutel under the mentorship of Dr. Md Shamim Sarker will be using data obtained from prior pooled sample testing to estimate the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) while accounting for common testing errors.

Robert Blankenship with the guidance of Dr. Abhay Kaushik seek to study Radford University’s student-managed investment portfolio organization’s performance as well as the reason for the variability in alphas based on risk-adjusted returns.

Sierra Bradley under the mentorship of Dr. Jamie Lau will be evaluating the relationship between flow quality and caddisfly diversity within the context of a natural gas pipeline installation across a stream ecosystem.

Brody Dawson, under the mentorship of Dr. Katie Arnold, will be observing the effects of curiosity and its relationship to learning and knowledge.

Bryan Dowd under the mentorship of Dr. Jennifer McDonel will gain a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural significance of music in Nepal, with a larger goal of assisting teachers at MusicArt Society in Kathmandu, Nepal develop music curricula based on cutting-edge research on music learning and best practices in music education pedagogy, paired with authentic folk music of Nepal.

Sadie Friend under the mentorship of Donna Boyd is examining the effect of Diabetes mellitus (DM) on bone and its risk of fracture in both accidental and non-accidental (e.g., abusive) forensic contexts with the goals of identifying the bony signatures of diabetes, determining whether they can be differentiated from those of osteoporosis, and evaluating whether they increase fracture risk in diabetics.

Taylor Hawkins under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis will be determining the influence that exogenous hormone modulation, through administration of royal jelly and juvenile hormone, has on energy investment in immunocompetence and self-repair in Madagascar hissing cockroaches and implementing the broader impacts of this research in the form of Radford's Roach Roadshow.

Kelly Hodges under the mentorship of Dr. Justin Anderson will determine if the natural chemical Coumarin has an affect on mosquito predator avoidance behavior and on the replication of La Crosse virus in mosquito cells.

Dylan Magdalin under the mentorship of Dr. Nicole Iannone will be assessing how unattended visual stimuli presented without people's conscious awareness influence conscious processes.

Cole Mitchell under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Trent will be engaged in score preparation, assisting in hi-resolution recording, and editing side-by-side with professional engineers of the Naxos, LTD in an HD studio in Los Angeles. Naxos is the largest distributor of classical music in the world.

Haley Mullins under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis will be examining the effect of Ficus insipida, a medicinal plant found in the Peruvian Amazon, on the parasitic infection Leishmaniasis.

Savannah Penven under the mentorship of Dr. Roann Barris will evaluate how the Museum of Modern Art decides to handle Spero’s mission as a woman artist and if they decide to highlight the message within her work or focus mainly on the aesthetic values that the work provides.

Moriah Rock under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Choate will collect and analyze data to determine how commonly college campus communities are gerrymandered into multiple legislative districts.

Emma Ross under the mentorship of Dr. Trish Winter will be conducting a quasi-experimental, quantitative evaluation of music therapy interventions to determine their effectiveness in reaching the speech/language goals of young children.

Krislyn Sourivong under the mentorship of Dr. Sandra Liss will analyze infrared data with the goal of determining the properties of dust in interacting dwarf galaxies.

Hannah Stewart under the mentorship of Dr. Sara O’Brien and Dr. Dayna Hayes will be exploring the treatment of PTSD through a novel fish model.

Rayshell Torres-Santana under the mentorship of Dr. Kim Lane will study the effects of mutations in the bacterial loop of E. coli β-glucuronidase with respect to inhibitor binding.

Sebrena Williamson under the mentorship of Professor Ji-Eun Lee will study how dance can operate between Western and Eastern cultures by creating room for universal expression and communication; it will develop and codify a choreographic process that includes layered international interpretations and audience participation in its creation.

Courtney Yule under the mentorship of Dr. Pam Jackson will be determining how the use of cannabinoids in adolescent rats affects behavioral development.

2018 SURF Awards:

Cory Ashworth under the mentorship of Dr. Sahwn Huston will be using an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope to study how temperature changes the growth of thin films.

David Blanco under the mentorship of Dr. Trish Winter is evaluating the impact of interprofessional music therapy and speech/language pathology interventions with children and the perceived stress of caregivers of children with speech and language disorders.

Sarah Church under the mentorship of Dr. Tim Fuhrer will run calculations to analyze the stabilities and properties of C36 metallofullerenes at various temperatures to gain an understanding of how and why they form the way they do in order to establish a basis of knowledge that can be utilized by other scientists in different fields.

Skyler Cumbia under the mentorship of Dr. Patricia Winter will be developing a focused ethnography of student perspectives on interprofessional collaboration between speech/language pathologists and music therapists in an intensive clinical practicum setting.

Erin Dimino under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Boydwill determine whether different environmental factors affect the rate of decomposition on a subject with sharp force trauma.

Claire Dundon under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Redmond will be examining the relationship between stress and the student athlete through extraction and analysis of the antibody Immunoglobulin A from saliva samples.

Daniel Harrison under the mentorship of Dr. Justin Anderson will determine whether ibuprofen interferes with replication of La Crosse virus and is found in wastewater at levels high enough to affect mosquito development.

Michael Hess under the mentorship of Dr. Rhett Herman will be developing a new micro-resistivity array to study the subsurface.

Sarah Jones under the mentorship of Dr. Anja Whittington will be investigating the actions being taken within the outdoor recreation and retail industry to promote Virginia as a tourist location for identifying members of the LGBTQ community.

Nicole Jones under the mentorship of Dr. Maxwell  studying the ethological relationships between the glass wing butterfly, Greta oto, and their host plants.

Rebecca Journigan under the mentorship of Neil Sigmon will be studying the process of how the Turing bombe broke the Enigma machine, an electro-mechanical machine used by the Germans in World War II.

Raymond Lundy under the mentorship of Dr. Pam Jackson is studying the effects of lack of weight gain during developmental stages of rats in cannabinoid trials.

Leslie Molina, under the mentorship of Dr. Kristina Roth, will be developing a method for on-site detection of the tetrahydrocannabinol molecule with the use of nanotechnology.

Mason Mowbray under the mentorship of Dr. Sharon Roger hepbrun will be examining how the medical treatment of Union soldiers differed based on their race during the American Civil War.

Sophia Rasiak under the mentorship of Dr. Beth McClellan will be updating the topographic map of the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation of Pulaski County, VA. This was last mapped 50 years ago, and will serve the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy.

Imani Rose under the mentorship of Dr. Sharon Hepburn will working with primary and secondary sources to examine the soldiers of the 370th Infantry Regiment of the 92nd Infantry Division.

Fiona Scruggs under the mentorship of Professor Deborah McLaughlin will be in France researching Josephine Baker, a legendary dancer, Civil Rights activist, French Resistance member, and children's author, in addition to choreographing an original dance performance inspired by the life, career, and historical period of Josephine Baker.

Drew Wolford under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis will be analyzing how two different hormones (royal jelly and juvenile hormone) interact and affect a species of tarantulas. 

2017 SURF Awards:

Justin Archer under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis will be testing the effect of Vespa Amino Acid Mixture, a compound derived from the Japanese giant hornet, on the mitochondria of genetically modified fruit flies.

Alex Atwood under the mentorship of Dr. Sara O’Brien and Dr. Chris Monceaux will be developing a method for the detection and quantification of trenbolone, an endocrine disrupting chemical used in the beef industry.

Morgan Bishop under the mentorship of Dr. Laura Gruss will be studying the correlation between foot structure, gender, type of sport and knee pain, while working with our soccer and track and field athletes.

James Board under the mentorship of Dr. Caleb Adams will be modeling Virginia’s Lone star tick as a disease vector for the spread of Rickettsia amblyommii and Ehrlichia chaffeensis.

Lauren Boush under the mentorship of Dr. JP Barfield will be working with individuals with Cerebral Palsy to demonstrate how they can increase their level of physical activity to reduce both pain and the amount of “social activity limitation.”

Kimber Cheek under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Boyd will be in Dundee, Scotland identifying risk factors associated with non-accidental pediatric cranial trauma toward preventing mortality from such trauma.

Adaisha Cole and Elizabeth Kunde under the mentorship of Dr. Trish Winter are evaluating the impact of interprofessional music therapy and speech/language pathology interventions on the development of skills in young children.

Evan Cowling under the mentorship of Dr. George Harakas will be synthesizing novel xenophilic metal clusters

Nicole Diambra under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis and Danah Bella will be examining Peruvian dance in an effort to gain insight into cultural preservation through dance, as well as the relationship between dance and tourism.

Chelsey Dietzel under the mentorship of Dr. Drew Dodson is creating a freshwater stingray sculpture and documentary on the creation and selected fauna of the Amazon.

Dhamindra Dulal under the mentorship of Dr. Sara O’Brien will be determining the effect on reproductive development in mosquitofish exposed to the endocrine disrupting chemical nonylphenol.

Camille Hamway under the mentorship of Dr. Dayna Hayes will be investigating the stress effects of animal-researcher interactions toward designing better biological and psychological research models.

Melissa Kesterson under the mentorship of Dr. Justin Anderson will be using chemically modified phenazines to inhibit the mosquito-borne La Crosse Virus.

Matthew Koldewey under the mentorship of Dr. David Sallee will be determining the impact of training on a BMT Suspension system on cutting speed.

Kristopher Moore under the mentorship of Dr. Amy Balija will be creating polymers from biorenewable materials that can remove pollutants from water.

Conner Philson under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis will be deploying an automated feeding system to better understand the conditions that affect primate feeding behaviors in anthropogenically disturbed and undisturbed sites within the Amazon Rainforest.

Christina Poole under the mentorship of Dr. Nicole Hendrix is examining which psychological attributes can predict the high use of police force.

Jean-Francois Racinet under the mentorship of Dr. Shawn Huston is studying the surfaces of halogenated molecular layers toward creating new organic electronic materials.

Annie Rudasill under the mentorship of Dr. Chelse Prather is investigating the link between micronutrient availability and grasshopper feeding and growth, which may be used in pest management.

Sharon Roller under the mentorship of Dr. Donna Boyd is developing a digital database of bone fractures for use in child death investigations.
