Degree Requirements for the Design Thinking MFA

The MFA in Art-Design Thinking is an online program that consists of 60 credit hours. Our flexible program allows students to start at any time. See the Course Descriptions for a listing of the required courses.

Radford University’s MFA in Art-Design Thinking curriculum provides an approach that focuses on a number of core competencies including:

  • Design Thinking – The theories and studio methods relative to creative cognition;
  • Design History – The historical and political context of design;
  • Design Research – The science of design grounded in research and scholarship;
  • Design Management – The dynamics of studio-based team work, collaboration and management; and
  • Design Doing – The experimental opportunities in virtual studios with team-based solutions.

Course Descriptions

DSN 740 Design Management Studio(3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in MFA - Design Thinking concentration.

This online course will provide opportunities for studying design management strategies, professional ethics, target markets, and operational theories.

DSN 645 Collaboration Studio (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in MFA - Design Thinking concentration

This online course will provide students with an overview of team dynamics, team leadership techniques, team protocols, and the appropriate application of interdisciplinary teams.

ART/DSN 550 International Art History I (3 credits)

The first of two online courses, students will investigate key moments in history that affected art and design, focusing on prehistory through the Renaissance period.

DSN 698 Directed Study (3 credits)

Prerequisite: Approval of the directed study supervisor, program coordinator, and advisor. Directed study form must be submitted to the Graduate College.

Semi-autonomous independent research on a design thinking topic of interest to the student. Provides the student with an opportunity to develop a conceptual sophistication on a specific topic. May be repeated twice for a maximum of six (6) credits. Can be used to fulfill elective requirements.

DSN 770 Research Methods (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in MFA - Design Thinking concentration, DSN 575.

This online course examines quantitative and qualitative research methods commonly used in the design professions.

DSN 705 Advanced Design Studio IV (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in MFA - Design Thinking concentration; DSN 700.

Building on earlier Advanced Design Studios, this online course will be the final interdisciplinary team studio and students will work to deliver comprehensive solutions for “clients” in emerging economies all over the world.

DSN 619 Design Thinking for Educators (3 credits)

Provides students with initial skills and competencies in applying instructional design principles to teaching and learning problems. The student applies Instructional Design methodologies to critical components in instruction including content, learner characteristics and diversity in technology integration.

DSN 700 Advanced Design Studio III (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in MFA - Design Thinking concentration; DSN 605; DSN 670 and DSN 645.

This online course will build on the previous studio and continue with more in-depth design thinking, problem seeking, brainstorming and ideation techniques and strategies. It will spend more time in the discovery and planning stages of the process and finish with evidence of innovative solutions to design challenges.

DSN 790 Research Project/Thesis (1-9 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing, MFA – Design Thinking program concentration; ART 550 /DSN 550, ART 555 /DSN 555, DSN 575, DSN 600, DSN 605, DSN 670, and DSN 700.

Development of a graduate project or thesis to be arranged with the approval of the student’s thesis supervisor, advisor, and the dean of the Graduate College. See Graduate College’s requirements for a graduate project or thesis.

DSN 611 Special Topics in Design Thinking (3 credits)

Studies of current topics of interest in the area of design thinking with an emphasis on new developments, technology, and/or research. Must be repeated on a different topic for six (6) additional credits. After or concurrent with the nine (9) credits, students may repeat DSN 611 up to two additional times on two different topics to satisfy elective requirements.

DSN 615 Readings in Design Thinking (3 credits)

Students in this course, in conjunction with their thesis/project advisor, select relevant readings to support and foster their research interests. Can be used to fulfill elective requirements.

ART/DSN 555 International Art History II (3 credits)

The second of two online courses, students will investigate key moments in history that affected art and design, focusing on the modern (post Renaissance period) era to the present day.

DSN 605 Advanced Studio II (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing, MFA – Design Thinking program concentration: DSN 600

This online studio will build on the Design Thinking Studio and continue with more in-depth design thinking, problem seeking, brainstorming and ideation techniques, and strategies. It will spend more time on the discovery and planning stages of the design process.

DSN 600 Design Thinking Studio (3 credits)

An introduction to design thinking, problem seeking, ideation techniques and strategies, creative cognition theories, creative intelligence, and the methodologies embedded in the design thinking process.

DSN 575 Design Theory and Research (3 credits)

In this course, students address the exploration of research versus information gathering in human behavior and design theories.

DSN 670 Environment Behavior Studio (3 credits)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in MFA - Design Thinking concentration.

This online course will review theories on environment behavior, introduce observational strategies and meanings of relationships to the environment.
