The Radford University Carilion (RUC) Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program has received a $160,000 grant from the Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation (CTF), whose mission is to inspire and champion research and education that optimizes clinical outcomes in transfusion medicine and assures a safe and sustainable blood supply for the U.S.

A ceremony was held at RUC on March 31 to accept the funds, attended by Radford University President Brian Hemphill, Ph.D.; Wendy Lowery, Radford University vice president for Advancement and University Relations; Susan Dewberry, CTF technical director; Laura Link, MLS program director and assistant professor; Krystina Angelini, MLS assistant professor and instructor of transfusion medicine; and Jennifer McBride, MLS instructor and medical laboratory scientist at Quest Diagnostics.

Following the presentation ceremony, Link and Angelini led the group on a tour of the MLS laboratory and to meet the current students in the program.

Link said that Angelini was instrumental in preparing the grant request and budget, adding that the funds will be used to purchase supplies and equipment employed in the practice of transfusion medicine and related disciplines.

“Students will participate in enhanced clinical simulation experiences and will learn skills that positively impact patients for years to come,” Link said. “We are very excited about this grant and want to thank Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation for their generosity.”
