Leading the Charge

The College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences (CHBS) is home to more than 2,000 students across eight departments.  Alumni from across the college’s disciplines are passionate about helping these students succeed. The CHBS Advisory Board - a group of dedicated alumni and friends of the college – is on hand to assist with networking, fundraising and the promotion of the college’s successes.

“A lot of alumni are looking for ways to get involved,” said Jeff MacKinnon ’85, founding chair of the Advisory Board. “This is one way they can stay involved with the school as it transforms and evolves in the 21st century.”

MacKinnon has spent much time and energy supporting the board’s growth and recruiting new members. One of his largest contributions was a $25,000 gift to endow the CHBS Advisory Board Scholarship, targeted toward rising sophomores in excellent standing who need financial assistance to continue their studies.

“Radford University is a great value, but sometimes people just need some more assistance. I wanted to try to help with that,” MacKinnon said.

According to CHBS Dean Kate Hawkins, MacKinnon’s example is a crucial one. The board members’ help can be significant for students in need.

“He just wanted to show people that the board can make a difference in many ways for our students, including financially,” Hawkins said. “He said ‘I want you all to follow my lead’ and that’s the kind of leadership that works.”
