CAREER ABSTRACT

The Exercise and Sport Studies Option is designed to provide students with a broad-based background in the Exercise and Sport Sciences.  Students in this option target their studies toward an area of interest such as coaching, administration, or exercise leadership.  Many students in this program intend to seek graduate study in the field or already have significant work experience in the fields of exercise, sport, and health education.

 This program allows students to specialize in two (2) of the following content areas:

     Coaching Education

     Commercial/Corporate Fitness

     Exercise and Sport Science

     Physical and Health Education

     Self-Defense/Martial Arts

      Sport Administration

What can I do with a degree in Exercise and Sport Studies?

 Students in this program generally apply their knowledge in a broad range of physical activity settings, such as coordinating youth sport or recreation programs, athletic coaching, or fitness/exercise leaders in community or clinical settings.  Many students pursue graduate study in one of the ESHE sub disciplines or use the degree to springboard into specific advanced study for careers such as physical therapy assistants (PTA) or other rehabilitation specialist.

What academic skills and strengths should I possess to be successful in sports medicine?

 Students should possess a strong background in their area of choice.  It is important that students consult with their advisor in order to determine their most appropriate plan of study.  For students pursuing careers in a fields demanding work experience, they should have extensive related field experience, as this program does not require an internship.  Most students in this program work with people in physical activity, sport, or health settings. Students generally should pursue and possess strong interpersonal skills.

What are the academic requirements, such as grade point average or minimums to take fieldwork?

Students should meet with an ESHE advisor early and often to determine their most appropriate course of study in the Exercise and Sport Studies program.  Fieldwork requirements do not pertain to majors in this program.  For those attempting graduate or advanced study, high GPA and external certifications in the field are essential “requirements.”

What courses may enhance my career opportunities in sports medicine?

Students should determine their career goals and meet with their advisors to select their areas of study.  Depending on the career goals, the ESHE program may be supplemented by strategic minors or experiences that enhance career opportunities. Students in this area are strongly encouraged to seek external certificates or licenses, such as coaching, martial arts and safety/CPR certifications, ACSM Fitness Instructor, or NSCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  Check with your advisor for certification opportunities.
