Our mission at the Center for Social and Cultural Research (CSCR) is: giving students experience in providing sociological knowledge and skills, and a professional identity as practicing sociologists; offering social research services for University, community and regional needs; supporting opportunities for scholarly research among the Sociology faculty.
Congratulations to Dr. Allison Wisecup (back row, center), who, along with co-authors Dennis Grady, Rick Roth, and Julio Stephens, won a Campus Sustainability Research Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education for their project and paper, "Comparative study of intervention strategies on student electricity use in campus residence halls." Awards were presented at the 2017 AASHE Conference & Expo in San Antonio, Texas. Read more about the Campus Sustainability Research Award.
Roots With Wings part of Virginia Foundation for the Humanities Grant:
The Old Church Gallery, Ltd., recently received a $5000 matching grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities for their ongoing project, “From the Front Porch to the Front Lines: Rural Virginia on a Threshold of Change.” The Old Church Gallery’s Floyd Story Center has preserved the recorded oral history of the community through programs such as the “Roots with Wings,” Place-based Education Project. The “Roots with Wings” project, 2007-2017, brings Radford University mentors, high school staff, and community non-profit volunteers together during the school semester to teach the discipline of oral history collection to Floyd County High School students.
