Hi! I started teaching at Radford University in 2018. My research focuses on Shakespeare (adaptations and performances of his work) and other playwrights from his time-period; I also enjoy teaching British literature from every era. I'm a science-fiction nerd and will take the chance to teach it and to talk about it whenever I can. I love board games and crafts, and I have a lot of fun sharing them at SWLL game nights and crafty afternoons. I'm also excited to serve as the advisor for Exit 109, Radford's student-run literary and visual arts magazine.
British and Commonwealth Literature I (ENGL 230): In this introductory survey-level course, students explore a wide range of texts from the beginnings of British literary history to the end of the eighteenth century and discuss the ways that different aspects of British history and society have shaped the literature.
Introduction to English Studies (ENGL 300): In this course intended primarily for English majors, students discuss literature from a variety of genres, including poetry, short stories, novels, plays and films, exploring different approaches to literary analysis and become familiar with research in English as a field.
Renaissance Literature (ENGL 433): Students read texts from a range of voices in Renaissance England, discussing major literary cultural shifts and how different writers responded to challenging questions of religion, political stability, gender and social class.
Seventeenth-Century Literature (ENGL 434): In this class, students examine a century of political turmoil in England through a literary lens, reading work from a variety of writers who grappled with the forces for change at work in their society.
Readings in Shakespeare (ENGL 472): Students explore Shakespeare's work in tragedy, history and comedy, alongside tracts, sonnets, letters, essays and manuals from his period, and analyze film performances and adaptations that keep his work alive today.
First-Year Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTAs) Mentor: In this role, I work with first-year graduate students in the Department of English master's degree program, as they gain experience teaching the ENGL 111 and ENGL 112 courses.
Exit 109 Faculty Advisor: In this role, I help to mentor the editor-in-chief for Radford University's student-run literary and visual arts magazine, which is part of Highlander Student Media. If you're interested in serving as part of the staff of Exit 109, let me know!
Curriculum Committee Member: This committee reviews various course-related proposals for the School of Writing, Language and Literature (SWLL) and makes recommendations to the other faculty about potential changes to the curriculum.
Science-fiction (some of my current favorites include Becky Chambers's Wayfarer series, Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut series and anything by N.K. Jemisin and Cory Doctorow). Strategy games (some current favorites include Terraforming Mars, Wingspan, Lost Ruins of Arnak and Roll for the Galaxy). Crafts (especially crochet, knitting and cross-stitch).
