Focus and Philosophy: I believe percussion education should empower students to think creatively, collaborate,
and expand the boundaries of what percussion can be. My teaching balances fundamentals
with innovation, encouraging students to explore both classical and contemporary approaches.
Background: Growing up as a Filipino-American percussionist, I was drawn to the diversity and
versatility of percussion instruments. My studies at Eastman and South Carolina gave
me a strong foundation in both performance and pedagogy, while my creative projects
keep me connected to new ideas in music.
Teaching: I lead Radford’s percussion program, teaching lessons, directing ensembles, and mentoring
students in solo and group performance. I also guide students in exploring new works,
arranging, and collaborating with composers. My aim is to help percussionists feel
prepared for both traditional and cutting-edge opportunities.
Research/Scholarship/Creative Work: I perform with the Roanoke Symphony, Amick-Newton Duo, and Wildlight Collective,
and co-founded Wildlight Publications to support emerging composers. My work includes
recordings of premieres, collaborations with composers, and creative projects like
the Set to Fire podcast.
