Please note: FONEMED’s average wait/callback time to speak with a nurse is 12 minutes; calls are prioritized based on symptoms. This service is not intended for use in the event of a life threatening issue or injury.

FoneMed is intended to be a “triage” service for recommendations regarding; over the counter medications, symptom relief, and advice on whether or not to seek medical attention for non-severe symptoms.

Radford University Student Health Services does not provide after-hours emergency services. Students with urgent health needs should utilize the following services:

MyChart is an electronic way to view your appointments, results, and send messages to your provider. First, you must be an established patient of a Carilion office or Radford University Student Health Provider.  Then, you may request an email link to register for MyChart.

Immunization Records:

If you started at Radford University in the Fall 2018 semester or later,  you can obtain your immunization records through the Admission’s Office by emailing  healthrecords@radford.edu  Please include the year you entered Radford University in the email.

If you entered Radford University before the semester of Fall 2018 you will need to complete the Authorization to Release Protected Health Information [PDF] form and either email the form to rush@carilionclinic.org or fax  it to 540-831-6638.  Please note:  Student Health keeps immunization records for 10 years and then it is destroyed.  Example:  If you started Radford University Fall 2015 your immunization record will be destroyed at the end of Fall 2025 semester.  

• Can I get an Absence Note for class?
  No generic "seen and treated" notes will be issued to students from the Student Health Center. The Student Health Center will issue absence notices to students only if it is evident to the clinical provider that the student should not be in class due to illness. In all other circumstances, students should communicate directly with their professors about their absences from class due to illness, or other reasons for which they are requesting special consideration.  Visit the Dean of Students website and click on Absence Notification.  Follow the instructions to submit your documentation, typically the after visit summary you received at check out from your visit to our office.  This is also available in you Carilion Clinic My Chart App "visits" section.

   

  Note: When the Student Health Center or the Office of the Dean of Students agrees to issue absence notices to students or faculty, these notes do not excuse the absence, nor do they guarantee the student will be permitted to make up tests or other missed assignments. Only the student's professors can make those decisions. The absence notice simply documents that the student's illness or other circumstances indicate that they are unable to participate in class for the time period designated.

• What if I become ill when the Student Health center is closed? What services are available?
  Student Health Center provides a 24-hour, 7 day-a-week, toll-free telephone service which will put the you in touch with a Registered Nurse (RN). The number for this service is: 1-866-205-2164.  This RN will assess health/medical problems and medical advice or offer appropriate referrals.  Reports of all calls are faxed to the Student Health Center and reviewed by the nurse will follow-up as needed (provided the student leaves his or her name and telephone number). 
  The local emergency department is located in the New River Valley Medical Center, another Carilion Clinic facility, and is less than 5 miles from campus.  The phone number is 540-731-2000.  There is an on-campus and a community EMS; both with excellent response time.
• Will my insurance cover visits to the health center?
  There is no charge for an office visit.  Immunizations and in clinic labs as well as labs drawn to be completed at outside reference lab will incur a fee.  Students may provide insurance information to bill for these services or they may pay out of pocket at the time of service.  We accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express, cash, or personal checks.  
  
  It is recommended that students have their insurance information with them on campus in case of emergencies and referrals for specialty care.  ** Parents/guardians are advised to contact their insurance company about coverage in the Radford area**
• Is health insurance available to student through the university?
  No, there is not a student health insurance option at Radford University at this time.  Please visit healthcare.gov for information on availability of private insurance.
• Are there certain days that the Student Health Center is closed?
  The clinic is closed on all university acknowledged holidays and when there are no classes in session (fall break, winter break, spring break).  During inclement weather, Student Health Services is open with limited capacity.  If the University is CLOSED Student Health will be open for in person appointments beginning at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Virtual appointments are also available during that time as well as before and after in person hours.  Student Health staff will monitor voice mail on inclement weather days beginning at 8:30 am. 
• How can I take responsibility for my healthcare needs?
  • Visit the student health center and pick up a Student Health Center brochure which lists services and contact information.
  • It is important for you to know your own health history:  allergies to medications and foods, significant family medical history, medication list (including doses, frequency, and purpose).
  • Make sure you carry a copy of your health insurance card with you at all times, and that you know what coverage you have and how to contact the insurance company.
  • Make sure you have turned in your Health Record form to Admissions.  (For pertinent medical history, attach copy of records from the treating physician.) 
  • Make sure to have basic first aid supplies: digital thermometer, band-aids, cold and sinus medication, over the counter medications that have worked for you in the past, chemical cold pack, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, etc.
  • When you make an appointment with student health center be prepared to provide the following:  describe symptoms, duration and severity of symptoms, any medications taken, temperature, etc.  Try to have your class schedule available when scheduling an appointment.
  • It is recommended that you obtain the flu immunization.  Student health will evaluate and treat numerous students with acute influenza during flu season which usually appears during the most academically intense and stressful periods of fall and/or spring semester. 
     
  • Reminder: If you desire any information to be released to anyone about your healthcare or treatment, you must sign a release form at student health for EVERY visit you want discussed with someone other than yourself.
