Staff Bios


Dr. James Penven
Director of Housing and Residential Life

James Penven is the Director for Housing and Residential Life. In this position, Jamie provides overall direction for the on-campus residential experience at Radford University. This includes oversite of the student residential learning experience as well as the housing assignments and facilities. 

Penven holds a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in Higher Education, a master's degree in counseling from Marshall University and a bachelor's degree in sociology from West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Previously, Jamie served as an associate director, assistant director and area coordinator for housing and residence life at Virginia Tech. He also worked at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington as a residence coordinator.

Jamie is currently a member of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers, and the Residential College Society. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of College and University Student Housing with ACUHO-I.


Amber Mullen
Associate Director of Residential Life

Amber earned her bachelor's degree at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Student Affairs in Higher Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Karen Sutherland
Associate Director of Assignments & Technology

Karen earned her bachelor's degree at Colorado State University and a Master of Education from Indiana University - Bloomington.


Erin Long
Assistant Director for Retention Programming

Erin earned her bachelor's degree at Winthrop University, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Delaware and a Master of History from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro.


Amanda Anderson
Area Director

Amanda is the Area Director for Governor’s Quad, which consists of Stuart, Floyd, Peery and Trinkle Halls. Amanda earned her bachelor’s degree at Virginia Tech and her master’s degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
