Zero Waste Fact Sheet

What is a zero waste event?

This is any event that maximizes recycling, minimizes waste, reduces consumption and ensures that products are recycled back into nature or the marketplace.

How do I start?

Think about the venue, food, drinks, decorations, awards/prizes and disposal of waste that will achieve your zero waste goals. Consider using items that can be reused, recycled, or composted. Use minimal packaging when possible and develop appropriate signage to promote and direct participants toward the zero waste process.

What types of materials do I use?

For paper products (cups, napkins, plates), basically any food-soiled paper is compostable. When reusable dinnerware or flatware are not available, consider using “bio plastics” which look and feel like plastic, but are actually corn or potato-based, and will break down at a commercial composting facility. Use bulk condiments and locally grown foods when possible. Serve drinks in pitchers instead of single-serve containers.

What are the benefits?

Waste reduction, keeps waste out of the landfill, reduces harmful greenhouse gases.
