Celebrate your #RadfordTraditions!

Radford University is hosting digital campus celebrations for three important traditions between April 13 and April 17, 2020. The Halfway There, Junior Twilight and Senior Signing events mark milestones, recognize accomplishments and ignite Highlander pride in sophomore, junior and senior students on the main campus.

“Even in these unprecedented times, we are celebrating the exciting opportunities that await our students today and tomorrow,” President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., said. “These student-centered celebrations are a special opportunity for us to recognize the accomplishments of our talented Highlanders as part of their unique experience and Radford journey.”

The virtual events are accessible on the Traditions Week webpage beginning April 13. Be sure to get involved in your #RadfordTraditions.

Halfway There: A Celebration of Sophomores is a University tradition that celebrates sophomore students as they approach the halfway mark to Commencement. When held in person, this campus walk includes a community gathering and opening remarks on McConnell Lawn. Each sophomore student is issued a challenge coin that holds the wisdom, well-wishes and promises of the sophomores who came before them. Current sophomores would then impart their own wisdom, well-wished and promises into that coin and toss it into the campus fountain.

Sophomore students can participate in Halfway There 2020 on the Traditions Week webpage by taking a short survey, asking for words of wisdom and providing contact information to receive their coin by mail. Every sophomore who completes the survey will also be in the drawing for a $4,000 Presidential Scholarship. Participants are also encouraged to share their virtual coin toss on social media using #RadfordTraditions.

Junior Twilight: A Celebration of Juniors honors juniors as they prepare to embark on their senior year. This annual campus tradition brings the community together at the Heth Clock Plaza and includes games, prizes, food, music and more. Students are asked to share their hopes and commitments for their senior year at Radford University. Every junior student is issued a custom Radford University keychain registered to them and cannot be found in any other location.

Junior Highlanders can participate in Junior Twilight 2020 on the Traditions Week webpage by sharing their hopes and commitments for their senior year in addition to their current contact information to receive their keychain by mail. Additionally, participants will have three entries for prize packs to be drawn the following week. Participants are also encouraged to share a photo with their keychain on social media using #RadfordTraditions.

Senior Signing: A Celebration of the Class of 2020 highlights the significant accomplishments and future endeavors of senior Highlanders. Students will “sign off” on their next journey, whether that is attending graduate school, starting a successful career, joining the military or following their dreams. This event is traditionally held at the Highlander bench in front of Russell Hall as a piece of the Russell Hall Block Party. Seniors would have the photo taken, share their next steps and continue to celebrate with colleagues at the Block Party.

Seniors can participate in Senior Signing Day 2020 on the Traditions Week webpage by completing a survey about their plans and sharing their address in order to receive a special gift in the mail. Finally, seniors are encouraged to take picture of themselves holding a self-made sign about their next steps and share it on social media using #RadfordTraditions.

These celebrations are a special opportunity for the campus community to come together digitally to share in each other’s successes, encourage one another and demonstrate a strong sense of Highlander pride.
