Radford University President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., delivered his fourth annual State of the University Address on November 13, 2020.

The address was presented in a virtual platform, which has become a staple of our campus and our society.

During the presentation, President Hemphill reflected on past accomplishments and highlighted many bold initiatives of the University’s future.

President Hemphill recognized the many individuals who persevered and rose above the challenges of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Students such as Adam Barry, who was part of a team that delivered meals to area schoolchildren at their homes. Professors such as Jim Newman, Ph.D., who worked 12 to 13 hours a day from his home in Radford as a volunteer staff officer with the Virginia Defense Force.

“As Radford students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, we remained committed and strong,” President Hemphill said. “During times of significant achievement, and even in times of great uncertainty, we do not lose sight of our purpose, and we do not waver in our commitment. Highlanders are known for pushing through fears and frustrations to pursue their hopes and dreams while creating a better future for themselves, their families and the communities in which they live, learn and work. This is what defines members of the Radford family and sets us apart from others.”

Aligning with Radford University’s commitment to a sustainable campus environment, President Hemphill announced the signing of the Carbon Commitment. This commitment is focused on reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

President Hemphill also highlighted the exciting progress of the University’s new hotel, on track to be completed in 2023. This upscale, full-service boutique hotel will be called The Highlander and serve as a destination in our region and an important component of our future.

“Like each of you, I cannot wait to walk into The Highlander for the very first time and be amazed at the level of service and quality that will be available for our community and special guests,” President Hemphill said.
