Each fall, students, faculty and staff dedicate their time and service to welcome the newest members of the Radford University family.

As new students and their families roll onto campus - vehicles packed with clothes, sheets, cords, posters and plenty of food - volunteers are eagerly awaiting to help unload and move the belongings into residence halls.

These enthusiastic volunteers, known as Highlander Haulers, take the stress out of the moving process and make it an enjoyable experience for all. Year after year, families relay to members of the Radford University community how smoothly the “haul” went and how friendly and accommodating the volunteers were.

“Moving a student into the residence halls can be a daunting and overwhelming task for many, but the Highlander Haulers do a fantastic job of reducing the stress and spreading the Highlander spirit of pride, selflessness and volunteerism,” said Associate Dean of Students Bruce Hayden.

With the fall 2019 semester quickly approaching, Radford University is asking current students to remember their exciting move-in day and join the community of volunteers that once provided them with a helping hand.

“Becoming a Highlander Hauler shows incoming freshmen what it means to be a Highlander – to be real, responsive and resilient,” Hayden said. “Highlanders Haulers are always willing to go above and beyond to help their fellow peers as they start their exciting journey at Radford University.”

Students can sign up to be Highlander Haulers through the RU Involved website. Volunteers are needed on Thursday, Aug. 22, and Friday, Aug. 23. Highlander Haulers who live on campus will be allowed to move in early if they attend both move-in shifts. The last day to sign up is Wednesday, Aug. 12.
