CHBS opens new Writing Center
The College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences (CHBS) unveiled the CHBS Writing Center on Sept. 25.
The Writing Center, located in CHBS 4800, will serve Radford University students enrolled in CORE 101 and 102, as well Honors 103 students. The Writing Center space was recently transformed to fully utilize the learning space. Hours for the fall semester will be 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday. Consultation appointments are available on the hour.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to centralize the services that we are offering to our students,” said Katherine Hawkins, dean of CHBS. “Strong writing will set them up to be successful for the rest of their time at Radford, increase retention and boost their job opportunities.”
Students will be able to make appointments at the CHBS Writing Center via phone at 540-831-7605, firstname.lastname@example.org or by dropping in. In the future, students will be able to make an appointment via a specialized Starfish portal.
“[Following] every consultation, the CHBS Writing Center consultant will write up information from the session and include recommendations for the student,” said David Beach, professor of English. “The student will have access to that. Starfish advisors will also be able to access it and the goal is to help with retention along the way.”
Students will be able to gain help on focus, organization, brainstorming, drafting and editing techniques at the CHBS Writing Center. Proofreading is not a service offered at the Writing Center.
“We want to provide the best possible support for our students so they complete their first year at Radford with the strongest possible writing skill set they can, as it will serve as the foundation for all of their academic work thereafter,” Hawkins said.
