Campus encouraged to participate in Her-Story Celebration

The Radford University community is invited to participate in the 14th annual Her-Story Celebration as part of National Women's History Month.

The online festival takes place throughout the month of March and is dedicated to sharing stories by members of the Highlander community who take a woman, women or aspects of womanhood as their focus. The goal of the celebration is to celebrate the extraordinary in ordinary women’s lives. The theme of this year’s celebration, "When We Dare," is inspired by the words of writer-activist Audre Lorde: “When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”

Beginning March 1 and extending through March 31, subscribers to the Her-Story Listserv receive a daily posting from one of the list’s members. The function of the list and of the celebration is to preserve and honor the voices and experiences of contributors.  The Her-Story listserv is a safe zone where contributors can share their experiences without fear of judgment or reprisal.

To sign-up for the listserv or to volunteer to share your story with the Her-Story listserv, send an email to Erin Webster-Garrett at  The goal is to publish one piece each day in March.

All forms of narratives, including short essays, poems, short stories, photo journals and short films, are welcome.  All tributes should take as their subjects the women or aspects of womanhood that have had an important impact upon or been a source of inspiration for the writers. Though this is primarily a university event, tributes and subscribers from the larger community are welcome.

Contributions are accepted throughout the month of March, but contributors are encouraged to reserve their day now. To sign up for a date and for additional information regarding submission deadlines and format, email

A sampling of past tributes are posted on the Her-Story webpage.
