President Kyle welcomes the class of 2018

Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle on Thursday offered words of welcome and advice to future members of RU's Class of 2018.

"That sounds like a long time away, but it won't be," Kyle assured the students. "These next four years will just fly by."

The president addressed more than 350 incoming freshmen and their guests in Bondurant Auditorium during the second session of the Quest orientation program.

"You will find that this particular period of your life is going to be one of the most challenging, rewarding, exciting and most life-altering times," she said.

Kyle reminded students that she, too, was once a wide-eyed college freshman, and as a parent of two college graduates and one college student, she also carried a message for family members. "Your son or daughter will not have success here without the role that you parents are going to play," Kyle said. "And we invite you to become a partner with us - to help us coach your son or daughter to success here at Radford."

Both students and parents will have the opportunity through Quest to explore Radford's campus and prepare for the fall semester. For students, the two-day program offers academic guidance and social activities. Concurrent events are provided for parents, including sessions on campus safety, meal plans, parking arrangements and financial aid.

As groups tour campus, President Kyle cited the multiple construction projects they'll encounter, including the Center for the Sciences, the Recreation and Wellness Center, the new home for the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, the renovations and enhancements to the residence halls, intramural and club sports facilities and the Division 1 athletic campus.

"We are in construction mode here," Kyle said. "All of this construction and renovation is so you, our students, have the best campus, the best classrooms and the best student-life facilities to foster the best opportunities for you to achieve individual success here."

President Kyle concluded her remarks with a reminder of Radford University's commitment to academics and dedication to helping students reach their goals.
