It's easy cleaning green at Radford University

When RU students moved into off-campus apartments at the beginning of the fall semester, they received a healthy inventory of green cleaning supplies and green cleaning recipes. Now, RU Sustainability, Housing and Residential Life and Housekeeping Services are sharing the recipes with everyone. The recipes below can make cleaning easier and safer.

Green Cleaning Recipes

Window cleaner
- In a spray bottle, put ¼ - ½ teaspoon liquid detergent, 3 tablespoons vinegar, and 2 cups water, shake and use.

Floor cleaner - In a bucket, mix ¼ cup vinegar in 1 gallon warm water. Mop linoleum floors, rinse with water, make sure not to leave large pools to dry.

Microfiber cloths – can be used as a dry duster or when dampened. Great for removing smudges. They’re machine washable (100s of uses) too.

Toilet cleaner/deodorizer - Sprinkle toilet bowl with ¼ cup baking soda. Drizzle with ¼ cup vinegar, then scour with a toilet brush.

Oven cleaner - Sprinkle oven with ½ cup baking soda (more if needed) and spray with water. Let sit for several hours or overnight before scraping up stains and spills. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Soft scrub - Pour ½ cup of baking soda into a bowl and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge and wash the surface. Perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub (rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit).
