Earth sciences honor society wins inaugural national award

Radford University's Epsilon Eta chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE), an honorary society, has won the first Outstanding SGE Service Award given by the national society that recognizes earth science scholarship and professionalism.

"That we are the first chapter in history to be recognized reflects the hard work and enthusiasm all our members have put in being active and involved," said chapter President Jennifer All, a senior geology major.

RU's 15-member chapter gave more than 1,000 hours of service in a variety of activities, All said. They hosted Science Days, during which K-12 students visited Reed-Curie Hall for science education events. Members also staffed the Museum of the Earth Sciences, organized a series of fund-raising activities and hosted earth science-related outreach events like the recent screening of "Chasing Ice," a cinematic exploration of the diminishing arctic environment.

The award, which is accompanied by a certificate and cash prize, was developed and implemented at the SGE's recent convention in Charlotte, N.C., to recognize chapters that are active with outreach projects on behalf of the earth sciences.
