Dec. 3, 2019: Social Explorer

The Social Explorer database lets you access and analyze a wide range of data, including maps, tables, and geodata that provide illustrations of census and other population data in the United States.

Through this database you can find maps that illustrate information ranging from political data and crime statistics by county to environmental information and business patterns by geography and industry. You can use these maps to identify and analyze trends in industries and geographical locations.

Additionally, you can explore details about individual surveys (broken down by year) by clicking the Data Dictionary tab. You can click on a survey name to find information about it as well as all tables that are included in the survey.

 Through this website you can also access datasets of geography of the United States throughout history by clicking on the Geodata tab.

The Social Explorer website is a helpful resource that allows you to view and analyze a wide range of statistical information about populations, geography, and historical trends in the United States.

Sept. 12, 2019: Safari Tech Books Online Is Now O’Reilly Online Learning

Safari Tech Books Online has changed its name and is now O’Reilly Online Learning. Through this resource you will be able to access a wide range of ebooks, videos, and other helpful resources. You can browse content by topics such as travel and hobbies, business, career development. You can also access Resource Centers to browse curated lists of materials based on specific topics. Additionally, you can browse Learning Path modules that can help improve skills in such areas as management, making presentations, and computer programming.

O’Reilly also provides many useful tools to engage with their content. While reading ebooks you can highlight portions of text and then access those sections later by clicking on the “Highlights” tab. Additionally, you can save Playlists of books and videos to create a personalized list of resources. You can also keep track of books and videos you have browsed by looking at your browsing history.

June 19, 2019: Roanoke Times Digital Archive

Radford University users now have access to the Roanoke Times Digital Archive. Through this resource you will be able to access all of the newspaper articles that are published in the print edition, with a three month embargo. This means that there will be a three month delay between an issue being published in print and it being accessible online.

You can easily browse the newspaper by issue or by selecting a specific date. Additionally, you can search all articles for relevant keywords, topics, or events, or search by criteria such as author, headline, source, and word count.

March 8, 2019: Films on Demand

Films on Demand is an excellent source for accessing documentaries, news clips, and instructional videos on a range of topics. This database provides access to a large number of videos from a variety of sources, including ABC News, PBS, and the BBC, and other notable sources.

Through this database you will be able to access a wide range of videos, including biographies on notable figures, as well as a collection of critically acclaimed Ken Burns documentaries. Additionally, you can find a large collection of TED Talks, as well as “Core Concept” videos covering topics such as financial and business issues, basics of statistical analysis, and writing essentials.
