MOAT Security Awareness Training

To provide a secure Information Technology environment, all members of the university community must be aware of IT system security and their responsibilities to protect the University’s IT systems and data. The IT Security Awareness Training [PDF] policy requires that all university employees complete annual security awareness training.  MOAT is an online training tool provided by Awareity, Inc. that allows users to meet this annual requirement and tracks progress and compliance of all users.

To complete this training:

  • Open Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Safari to take the training.
  • Connect to the MOAT login page. (
  • Allow pop-ups from the training website or the training software may not work.
  • Your login ID is (Your full email address)
  • If you forget your password or cannot log in for any reason, click the Request A New Password link on the MOAT login page and a temporary password will be emailed to you.

After logging in and accepting the agreement, instructions will be located in the center of the screen and will direct you to a list of modules on the left. Clicking the modules on the left will open sub modules. Finishing each sub module will change the progress symbol from an empty circle to a partially filled circle. Completed modules will show a check mark. If you answer incorrectly, just go back through the module and try the question again. Finally at the bottom of the list, you will find the Radford University Vault which contains additional information about Radford University IT Policies.

You will be required to read and agree to these policies at the end of your training. The time required to complete the training is approximately one hour, however, many users finish in much less time. Also the training may be completed over several sessions, so you do not have to do it all at once.

Why do I need to take information security awareness training? Information security awareness training is important in ensuring that we are all informed about our individual responsibilities. The information provided in the training will benefit you in your personal and professional life as you learn about topics such as malware (viruses, spyware, etc.), spam, phishing and identity theft. IT Policy 5103 - Security Awareness Training [PDF] requires that the training be completed.

Why do I get e-mails from or Radford University contracts with Awareity to provide this training. Messages generated by the training system may come from or Be sure that none of your e-mail spam filters are preventing these types of messages from being delivered to your inbox.

Who must complete training? Anyone listed in Policy 5103 [PDF] is required to complete Information Security Awareness training.

What will happen if I do not complete training? Your access to RU Information Systems will be disabled. If your account is disabled for failure to complete training you must then complete it from a home or public computer. Your account may not be reinstated immediately.

What do I need to take this training? A Windows PC with Internet Explorer version 6 or higher or FireFox or a Macintosh computer with the Safari Web Browser. Windows PC's and Macintosh computers can be found in the Library and other academic computing labs on campus. 

Why am I getting a blank white screen when I attempt to login? You may have a pop-up blocker installed that is preventing the training software from loading. You must allow pop-ups from the training website.

I thought I had completed training but I am still getting notices from Awareity. Why am I getting these messages? If you are still getting messages from Awareity then you have not completed all portions of the training. On the left side of the training screen are a list of modules. There will be check marks next to all of the modules you have completed and circles next to the modules you have not completed. You must answer all of the questions correctly and agree to all of the documents in the Radford University Vault in order to complete the training.

How do I print my certificate? While you are not required to provide a copy of your certificate to receive credit for completing the training, you may print your certificate at any time after completing the training.

To print your certificate:

  • Login to the training website.
  • Select the "Tools" button from the bottom of the screen.
  • Select "View and Print My Certificate of Completion."
  • Adjust your print settings for the certificate to print in horizontal "landscape" mode.

How do I change my password? If you know your password, you can change your password from the “Tools” menu (see the “Tools” link at the bottom of the training software screen). If you have forgotten your password, click “Request a new password” on the login page. If you use the “Request a new password” feature please be aware that the new password will be e-mailed to you, but there may be a delay in receiving the message.

I am having trouble changing my password. What could be the problem? We have found that the web browser cache will sometimes cause this problem. Clear your web browser cache, then close your browser, reopen it and try again. If you do not know how to clear your web browser cache, contact the Technology Assistance Center.
