Procedures

  1. Five fire drills a year must be done in all Residence Halls. One drill must be performed after sunset or before sunrise. Drills must be done within 10 days of the start of each semester.
  2. The first drill must be performed within 10 days of the start of classes, no exceptions. The Fire Safety Specialist shall coordinate the exact date and time with the Resident Director.
  3. The Fire Safety Specialist will call the RU Police and Facilities Department to advise them of the drill. The Resident Director will notify the proper Area Director before the drill is conducted.
  4. To initiate a drill the Fire Safety Specialist will activate a pull station for planned fire drills. A different pull station will be activated for each drill. The Fire Safety Specialist will then reset and re-arm the fire panel.
  5. Drills will be performed during a weekday and will vary by time and day. Drills must not be scheduled after 10 p.m.
  6. It is recommended that an exit be blocked occasionally to encourage occupants to seek unfamiliar exits.
  7. Resident Assistants and Resident Directors will assist in verifying that all horns and strobe lights are working.
  8. Resident Assistants and Resident Directors will ensure that all occupants have exited the building. Failure to leave the building during a fire alarm is a violation of RUs Standard of Student Conduct, and the State Fire Code. In addition, those who do not exit could be charged with a Class 4 misdemeanor by the RU Police Department.
  9. Resident Assistants and Resident Directors will note how long it takes occupants to evacuate and count the occupants who have evacuated.
  10. If a fire alarm goes off due to circumstances other than a drill, this can count as a drill if it occurs within 10 days of a planned drill, with the exception of the September and January drills.
  11. After the drill, the Fire Safety Specialist will call the RU Police at 5500 and verify that the alarm was seen on their fire alarm panel.
  12. Resident Directors will then complete the Fire Alarm Report and submit copies to the Safety Office.
