Biosafety

The university, through the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), reviews and authorizes research with recombinant DNA and biohazardous materials. EHS also reviews and assists researchers by inspecting laboratories to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements for biological research including the NIH rDNA Guidelines and the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL). EHS provides biosafety training and also manages the university's biological waste disposal program.

Researchers conducting biological research are required to:

  • Register their protocols with the IBC
  • Review the University's Biosafety Manual
  • Prepare a lab specific biosafety manual or SOP
  • Complete appropriate biosafety training
  • Correct all deficiencies identified during a biosafety inspection

Our biosafety services include: biosafety and bloodborne pathogen program development and implementation, training, emergency response, assisting Principal Investigators (PIs) to register their biological projects, containment facility design review, and guidance on safe handling of biological agents, proper biological waste disposal, and decontamination procedures.
