Biology students win library research awards

BiologyWinesett2018

Three biology majors were 2018 runners-up for the Winesett Awards for Library Research. They captured 3 of the 9 awards given out across the university. No other majors were so well-represented, and no other courses had multiple winners. Layne Dibuono, Kelly Hodges, and Kioshi Lettsome won their awards for research completed in their BIOL 232, Organismal Biology, course. All were sponsored by Dr. Karen Powers.

In BIOL 232, students write a detailed natural history account on an animal species of their choosing. They have the opportunity to publish their work as a web page provided by the University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web (http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/). This is a natural history-centric on-line database created FOR students, BY students. It’s a great opportunity for students to see the benefits of their hard work, as the top submissions are published on this web site.

Student winners, and selected animal species, are:

Layne Dibuono - Lesser flamingo - https://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Phoeniconaias_minor/

Kelly Hodges - Greater rhea - to be published this summer

Kioshi Lettsome - Peruvian booby - to be published this summer
