Health Humanities

Health Humanities

The health humanmites is the interdisciplinary study of the lived aspects of health in all its forms--illness, medicine, public health, disability, caretaking--from a non-biomedical perspective.

Being knowledgeable in the literary, historical, cultural, socio-economic, emotional, and political aspects of health can prepare one to be a successful professional, civic leader, community member, and citizen of our globalized world.

Students of all majors and career aspirations can benefit from study in the health humanities. Study in the health humanities helps you develop valuable skills and ways of thinking and being in the world, including:

  • perspective taking
  • ethical reasoning
  • tolerance of ambiguity
  • cultural and professional competency
  • empathy
  • social advocacy and critical consciousness
