Radford University Foundation Scholarships

The following Criminal Justice related scholarships are awarded by the Foundation.  Additional information on these scholarships and all Foundation scholarships is listed on their webpage.

The following scholarships are awarded to Criminal Justice majors only.

  • J. Patrick Graybeal Scholarship in Criminal Justice - Family, friends, and colleagues of Judge Graybeal created this scholarship endowment as a lasting tribute in his honor. Judge Graybeal spent four decades in the legal community of the New River Valley. He was first a lawyer, then Montgomery County Prosecutor for 25 years, and finally was a judge for more than seven years. Judge Graybeal is a former member of the RU Foundation's Board of Directors. The scholarship provides aid to a deserving student in Criminal Justice at Radford University.  The scholarship donor is The Honorable J. Patrick Graybeal.  Recipient must be a student majoring in Criminal Justice at Radford University, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must be a full-time student.
  • James C. Turk, Jr. & Allison Blanding Turk Scholarship - This scholarship was first awarded in 2008. Allison Turk is a 1993 RU graduate who majored in Journalism. Jimmy Turk is an attorney in Blacksburg. Mr. Turk’s parents are The Honorable and Mrs. James C. Turk, who have endowed three scholarships at Radford University. His brother, the Honorable Robert “Bobby” M.D. Turk and his wife, Laura Beitz Turk `87, M.S. `90 also have an endowment at RU. And his brother, D. Michael “Mick” Turk and his wife, Barbara Turk `87 are avid RU supporters. Mick was a former RU Rugby Coach. Jimmy and Allison wanted to create this scholarship to assist Radford University students who are majoring in Criminal Justice. First preference is given to a Men’s Basketball player, second preference given to a Women’s Basketball player.  The scholarship donors are Mr. and Mrs. James Turk.  To qualify for this scholarship, applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student or enrolled in an approved internship program with a declared major in Criminal Justice, maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and must demonstrate financial need.
  • The Honorable James C. Turk & Barbara D. Turk Criminal Justice Scholarship - 1997 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Judge and Mrs. James C. Turk are true ambassadors of Radford University. They give tirelessly to support and promote Radford and are active Arts Society and Athletic Association members. Judge Turk was a member of the Virginia State Senate and was a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Virginia. He served on the Athletic Associationäó»s Advisory Council, and on the Radford University Foundation Board of Directors. Mrs. Turk has served on the Arts Society Campaign Committee and on the Board of Visitors. Judge and Mrs. Turk have been avid supporters of Radford University for many years. Judge Turk passed away in July, 2014.  The scholarship contact is Mrs. Barbara Turk.  The Turks established this scholarship to assist deserving students at Radford University who are majoring in Criminal Justice. Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated history of good citizenship and community involvement.
  • Trooper Ricky Marshall McCoy Memorial Scholarship - Friends and family of Ricky McCoy established this scholarship in 1986. McCoy was a graduate of the University and majored in Criminal Justice. In January of 1986 McCoy, who had become a state trooper, was shot in the line of duty. The fund provides assistance to criminal justice majors.  The scholarship contacts are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Moorer.  Recipient of the scholarship must be an incoming or current full-time student, Criminal Justice Major and must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The following scholarship offers preference to Criminal Justice majors.

  • Nathan B. Marti Memorial Scholarship - Nathan Marti was a 2005 RU graduate who majored in Criminal Justice. He was a uniformed Diplomatic Security Officer for the Department of State. In 2007 he was killed by a drunk driver on his way to work. His sister Lindsay spearheaded the campaign to raise money to endow this Scholarship in his memory.  The scholarship donor is his sister, Ms. Lindsay Marti.  Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student in good-academic standing, be an active member of a recognized social fraternity or sorority and must have demonstrated leadership qualities through community service activities. Preference given to a Criminal Justice major.
