Radford University opened its largest academic building on campus to date in August 2016. The new headquarters of the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, known as the CHBS building, covers 143,600-square-feet and is home to many academic programs as well as the Dean’s office.

The new CHBS building was specifically designed by the Mosely Architects of Virginia Beach to become a state-of-the-art facility with the sole purpose of providing students with major specific resources. These include a television studio as well as several sound proof recording rooms, a moot courtroom and a forensic laboratory.

The state-of-the-art facilities in the new CHBS building are opportune for students to learn and grow.

Professor Joseph Staniunas has a history in the professional world, having begun his career as a news director and announcer at a radio station, eventually moving up to become an assignment editor for WDBJ-7 in Roanoke. He agrees that the move was an auspicious event.

“If we’re doing a newscast and people need to be adding scripts and writing stories for that, in the old building they were a couple floors down; the writing area was separate from the production area. Here, they’re right next to each other,” Staniunas said.

Staniunas believes that the new resources promote positive new opportunities for students.

“It’s a greater opportunity to simulate things that go on in the real world,” he adds.

The new CHBS building is also home to one of the largest Starbucks on the east coast. The relocation of Starbucks from the Bonnie to the new CHBS building has given more students the opportunity to visit the new building.

Sidney Hilmon, a senior photography major, has specific dietary needs that only Starbucks caters to.

“Starbucks is the only place I can eat because they make lactose and gluten-free food,” Hilmon said.

“I have to walk a mile to get to work now,” said Shabnam Rezaei, a senior graphic design major. She believes the new CHBS building is a pretty addition to campus.

The new CHBS building is home to Radford University’s largest college. With the move, the majority of the college members have been consolidated into a single building. For the first time, members of this college have the resources and space needed to teach and learn.
