2018 CHBS Alumni Awards

Radford University’s College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences (CHBS) presented its annual Distinguished Alumni Award to an alumnus who has served over the past 15 years working out of Rockefeller Center in New York as a reporter, writer, host, and producer for NBC News and MSNBC.

CHBS Interim Dean Matthew J. Smith recognized Anthony Terrell with the honor at the college’s annual alumni and family reception October 19 in the CHBS Building.

"Anthony Terrell has distinguished himself as a media professional,” Smith said. “It's our honor to be able to recognize his professional achievements with our college's Distinguished Alumni Award."

Terrell graduated from Radford University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in media studies. Terrell’s credits include reporting and producing for the Rachel Maddow Show as well as hosting The Reporter’s Notebook. In 2012 Terrell was embedded as a reporter with the Ron Paul campaign, and he was standing next to Hillary Clinton when she officially announced her candidacy for president in 2015.

In 2016 Terrell was assigned to produce NBC News’ coverage of the Donald Trump campaign, partnering with reporter Katy Tur. That coverage inspired Tur’s book Unbelievable, within which she frequently mentions Terrell. Leading up to the campaign’s conclusion, Terrell spent a year on the road away from his young family.

“Anthony Terrell deserves recognition as a Radford University alumnus who has ascended to the very pinnacle of the communications and journalism profession,” said Jacob A. “Jake” Crocker ’99, who nominated Terrell. “I am proud of him as a friend and classmate.”
