TEP & Licensure Assessments

Radford University Teacher Education Program & Licensure Assessments

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) sets high standards for their teachers.  To ensure Virginia classrooms are led by knowledgeable and prepared teachers, the VDOE assessment and training requirements for initial Virginia licensure.

By completing the RU Teacher Education Program (TEP), you will meet many of the VDOE requirements for licensure however there are some testing requirements you will need to meet outside of the TEP. 

Listed here are the assessment and training requirements you will meet before applying for Teacher Candidate status in the RU Teacher Education Program and some assessment requirements you will achieve to meet licensure requirements after full admission to the TEP.  The associated fees are included for reference (fees are subject to change).

Required BEFORE TEP Admission

Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) ............................. $130-180

 

Praxis II subject area exam required for licensure endorsement....................... varies

For TEP admission you are required to satisfy the Subject Area testing requirement for only one endorsement area, which must match the endorsement for which you apply for licensure.  Your endorsement area is the subject/grade level that you are preparing to teach. 

Virginia Department of Education Trainings and Certifications ...................... Free

 

After you apply for TEP Teacher Candidate status, there are several other assessments and or expenses related to retention in the TEP and/or licensure requirements.  Listed here are some anticipated costs associated with field experience and licensure assessments required after applying to the TEP.

First Aid, AED, and Hands-On CPR Certification ............................................. $90-100

Virginia Initial Teaching Licensure ...................................................................... $100 (in-state)

If license will be mailed to an out-of-state address the fee is $150.
