Pre-field Experience

Radford University Teacher Education Program 50 Clock Hours of Pre-field Experience

Prior to applying for your Teacher Candidate status with the Radford University Teacher Education Program (TEP), the Office of Field Experience (OFEX) requires all applicants to have experience working with youth or students in structured learning environments under direct supervision of a professional.

Qualifying pre-field experiences include observing classroom teacher(s), volunteering with organized youth groups or organizations, serving as a substitute or teacher’s aide in an organized and structured setting, coaching, working or volunteering as a camp counselor, or other activities that include working with youth or students. Private tutoring and babysitting are not qualifying experiences.

These experiences may be something you’ve done before you were a Radford student but at least 25 hours of your documented pre-field experience should be done as a Radford student.

If you are interested in observing or volunteering in a school setting, the OFEX can assist you in gaining access and making arrangements for this experience.  Please submit your request for in-school observing or volunteering by using this 50 Hours Request Form .

Your supervisor(s) will need to complete a documentation form after you have completed the pre-field experience.  If you completed part of your pre-field hours before coming to Radford, you will need to have your supervisor complete this same form.  Contact Dr. Robinson in the OFEX for the 50-hours Documentation Form or visit the OFEX in Peters Hall A104 for a paper copy.
