Web Communications Updates Web Guidelines and CMS Migration

The Radford University website, www.radford.edu, serves a variety of audiences and is important to forming the first impressions held by prospective students, parents, faculty and staff. Members of the community, state and national legislators, the media, alumni, donors and other important constituents regularly visit and form ideas about our campus based on what they find at www.radford.edu. Additionally, the site is a daily part of the lives of the campus community.

As part of the website redesign project, Web Guidelines have been provided to help departments maintain the University's consistent image across the website and protect the Radford University brand. The guidelines address current identity standards and best-practices for navigation and usability. To view these important guidelines, visit: http://cio.asp.radford.edu/webcommunications/docs/university-web-guidelines-revised.pdf.

Sites moving into the University's content management system (CMS) are provided with flexible templates that allow for the creative expression of individual brands while adhering to these guidelines. The Office of Web Communications, a part of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), provides three-hour training sessions to help academic and administrative departments move their sites into the CMS. Representatives from about 20 departments have attended the training sessions thus far and additional sessions will be offered this summer. For notification of the latest training opportunities and session schedule, email webcomm@radford.edu.

IT Issues Reminder on Storing Sensitive Data

IT Security reminds the University community about the importance of protecting highly-sensitive University data from theft, loss or unauthorized disclosure. University policy prohibits the local storage of highly-sensitive data on University computer systems and Commonwealth of Virginia law requires notification be made when individuals are impacted by disclosures. If your area has a justified business need to store highly-sensitive data, please contact itsecurity@radford.edu for assistance.

Young Hall Extends Hours for RU Students' Exam Preparation

Young Hall will remain open 24 hours a day from Friday, April 29 through May 1 to support RU students as they prepare for final exams and complete final projects. Card access will be required to access the building during these extended hours and only the front and back doors on the first floor will be accessible during this time.

DoIT Adds Mathematica, A New Math Software

'Mathematica' is a software application for performing complex mathematical computations for which DoIT has received several requests from RU faculty members. For the last several months Virginia Tech has been working on implementing a statewide license for Mathematica that will allow all state colleges and universities to participate in this agreement at a reasonable cost.

RU is working through the final stages of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to participate in this program. The MOU will enable RU to install Mathematica on university-owned computers and allow for faculty and student installation of the software onto personal computers. Additional details about this exciting addition will be forthcoming as the agreement and distribution methods are finalized.

'EndNote' Bibliographic Software License Expires June 30, 2011

DoIT purchased a campus-wide subscription to the bibliographic software package 'RefWorks' last summer to replace 'EndNote', RU's previous bibliographic software package. Users still using EndNote who have not transitioned to RefWorks should contact the Technology Assistance Center (TAC) at 831-7500 to begin the process of migrating.
