Faculty Computer Replacement Process Underway

Radford University is committed to replacing faculty and staff computers on a regular basis. Faculty due for a computer replacement during this year’s replacement cycle will receive an email soon to confirm their existing computer and provide information about the process for computer replacements.

In order to provide faculty with an opportunity to review the available computers and select the model that best meets their needs, DoIT will be holding several Computer Open House sessions from March 21-25 to enable faculty to review the available models and talk with an IT staff member about their final selection. For more information, please contact John Albano at jmalbano@radford.edu or 540-831-7205.

Office of Residential Life and DoIT Streamlining Key Processes

DoIT’s Enterprise Systems staff has worked for the past several months with the office of Residential Life to implement new Housing and Judicial Systems to replace the interim Banner solution currently in place. The office of Residential Life has been temporarily using the Banner Location Management module in place of their legacy system which has been out of commission for over a year. The new system, CBORD Odyssey, was purchased in the fall of 2010 and the staff is looking forward to the streamlining it will provide for their office as well as the enhanced online functionality for the students.

In the new system, students access the Odyssey Web interface to enter housing applications. Students can enter preferences for quad and building or can request to return to the same room or building in which they currently live. They can also enter roommate and smoking preferences. Students will soon be able to log on to select their actual room.

The implementation marks important progress as compared to the legacy system in which students stood in line to select rooms off a list tacked to the wall from which selected rooms were crossed by hand. As more of the CBORD Odyssey system is utilized, the system will provide more process improvements and time savings for key housing and judicial functions.

Gregg Shadel, Don Duncan and Ron Rojewski from Enterprise Systems and the Systems Engineering group handled the implementation with guidance from Jeanette Sarver, Jeff Orzolek, Stacy Griffin and Katherine Lavinder of the Residential Life Office and the Dean of Students.

DoIT’s Mass Email Guidelines Ensure Accessible Communications

As part of Radford University’s commitment to ensuring its communications are accessible to individuals with disabilities, the university has adopted mass email guidelines. Mass email is an electronic communication that is sent to multiple recipients but is not part of normal business communication. Alumni newsletters, event invitations and campus-wide announcements are common examples of mass email.

The purpose of the guidelines is to ensure that electronic communications:

  1. are in compliance with accessibility standards
  2. comply with guidelines that ensure network security
  3. effectively and efficiently use campus resources

The guidelines affect those users who distribute messages via RU Announce, as well as those who distribute e-mails off campus. To view the complete guidelines, visit the CIO website at http://cio.asp.radford.edu/webcommunications/default.aspx/ and contact Jaime Hunt, director of web communications, at jhunt7@radford.edu with any questions.

DoIT Shares Tip for Banner on How to Configure the Local ‘Jobsub’ Directory

The tip is on how to configure the local ‘jobsub’ directory. When running reports from ‘jobsub’ in Banner, review them through the GJIREVO form and save them to a local directory. To do so:

  1. Open the GUAUPRF (User Preferences) form
  2. Click the Directory Options Tab
  3. The first item Description is ‘Local Directory for saving output’. This is the directory where GJIREVO will save output. The default value is C:\temp, and no change is needed to have the output go here.
  4. If you would prefer that the output go to another directory, you may update the User Value to another directory. This directory must exist, so be sure to create it if it doesn’t already exist. Include the drive letter.
  5. All users are responsible for abiding by the Data Storage and Media Production Policy which prohibits storing highly sensitive data on local computers.

Contact Enterprise Systems at 831-7536 with any problems or further questions.

This useful tip has been offered by a Banner user. Users are encouraged to share the helpful tips that might be of value to others by emailing them to jamcnabb@radford.edu.
