Website Project Update: Migrating to the Content Management System (CMS)

Now that Radford University has launched its new web presence, many people have questions about moving their sites into the content management system (CMS).

A pilot group of individuals from 10 departments and colleges across campus have completed content migration and CMS training during the last month and will be bringing their sites into the CMS.

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) offers three-hour training sessions that provide guidance on requesting a CMS account, reviewing current content and drafting new content. The training also provides tips on establishing navigation architecture and includes hands-on training using the CMS. The next round of training will be offered in the second half of March.

Registration for the March sessions will begin the first week of March and the training will be offered approximately every six weeks. The number of different departments or sites able to attend each training session are limited. To sign up for notification of the sessions, contact Jaime Hunt at jhunt7@radford.edu.

Peters Hall Classroom Upgrades Over Spring Break

SMART Boards in several Peters Hall classrooms are scheduled to be upgraded during Spring Break. These upgrades will replace the existing 65-inch wide SMART Boards with 94-inch-wide boards that allow for display of 16 x 10 wide-screen output. The rooms in Peters Hall impacted by this upgrade are: C116, C117, C103, C142, C143 and B160. If you have any questions about this scheduled upgrade or problems with technology in any of the campus classrooms, please contact the Technology Assistance Center at 831-7500.

VPN To Be Upgraded and Outage, March 12

Radford University' VPN service will be unavailable on Saturday, March 12 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. while the service is upgraded. DoIT will be upgrading the current VPN architecture to provide redundancy and additional stability for this critical piece of IT infrastructure. While the upgrade is in progress VPN connections will be unavailable.

Please contact Zeb Bowden, director of IT Infrastructure, (zbowden@radford.edu) with any questions or concerns.

Increase PC Security by Running With "Standard User" Privileges

Studies have shown that a significant increase in PC security and a reduction in virus/spyware/malware infections can be achieved simply by logging into a computer with an account that does not have full "administrator" privileges. These infections are loaded on a computer (through web surfing, for example) without the user's knowledge. Furthermore these infections operate with the access and privileges of the user logged in to the computer. If the user account is an administrator on the computer, a malware program can install itself, make system level changes and exploit operating system vulnerabilities that it would not be able to do if the user were logged in with lower level privileges.

In 2009, RU's DoIT adopted the industry best-practice of issuing all computers with "standard user" privileges. Since implementing this policy, the Technology Assistance Center (TAC) has seen a noticeable decrease in virus, spyware and malware infections on computers with reduced user privileges as compared with those computers where users have administrator access.

The majority of campus users should see no decrease in functionality due to this change in user access. However users needing to install software packages or hardware devices or needing to run certain specialized software programs may need elevated privileges. To accomodate this need, all university issued PCs are loaded with a program called 'Sudo'; which allows users to run programs and perform certain functions with administrator privileges.

For instructions on using the Sudo program, please see https://php.radford.edu/~knowledge/lore/article.php?id=231. In certain cases Sudo access is not sufficient to perform the required tasks. In these situations, please contact the TAC at 831-7500 or submit the online assistance form at https://tac.asp.radford.edu/ for additional options.

RU ’06 - B.S., Computer Science

How long have you been employed in the Division of Information Technology at Radford University?
I began work at RU in July, 2008. I left in March, 2010 only to realize how much I missed it here and returned in August. I am very happy to be back.

Family:
My parents, Arnie and Cathy, both live in Roanoke and I have two older brothers, Andrew and Wesley, as well as two step-sisters, Courtney and Kelly. I also have a cat named Bentley.

Hometown:
Troutville, Va.

Interests/Hobbies:
I enjoy being active, whether it be playing a pick-up game of basketball, running up a mountain or swinging a golf club. If I’m lying around the house doing nothing then I’m probably sick!

Favorite Vacation Destination:
Wintergreen Ski Resort

Favorite part of your job:
I enjoy the staff who surround me. Everyone here in DoIT is a pleasure to work with and they make me feel appreciated for the things I do.
